7/6/2023 0 Comments Suleika between two kingdomsBut as she would soon learn, a cure is not where the work of healing ends it's where it begins. When Jaouad finally walked out of the cancer ward-after countless rounds of chemo, a clinical trial, and a bone marrow transplant-she was, according to the doctors, cured. She would spend much of the next four years in a hospital bed, fighting for her life and chronicling the saga in a column for The New York Times. By the time Jaouad flew home to New York, she had lost her job, her apartment, and her independence. Just like that, the life she had imagined for herself had gone up in flames. Then a trip to the doctor and, a few weeks shy of her twenty-third birthday, a diagnosis: leukemia, with a 35 percent chance of survival. Next came the exhaustion, and the six-hour naps that only deepened her fatigue. It started with an itch-first on her feet, then up her legs, like a thousand invisible mosquito bites. The real world she found, however, would take her into a very different kind of conflict zone. In the summer after graduating from college, Suleika Jaouad was preparing, as they say in commencement speeches, to enter "the real world." She had fallen in love and moved to Paris to pursue her dream of becoming a war correspondent. As a boy growing up in Madras he was always vaguely aware of the three faces that stared out of their silver frames but it was only when it was too late to ask anyone who could have told him their story that curiosity, family piety - indignation at an injustice done? - brought him to ask himself who those men were and why they had been so completely erased from family memory or the collective consciousness of post-independence India. Such was the case with Karnad’s own Parsi family, and a history of which he knew almost nothing. There will inevitably be readers who dislike or distrust such an approach but there are vast areas of history that can never be recovered through conventional sources, lives and truths that have slipped beyond the reach of regimental diaries, oral tradition or even family lore and can only be reclaimed through the imagination. It is just as well that the writing is as good as it is, because Farthest Field inhabits that risky no man’s land between historical fact and imaginative reconstruction. Britain should get out of the electric vehicle business 7/6/2023 0 Comments Book the light we cannot seeIn the end, Doerr suggests that no vision is perfect and true. In general, Doerr associates vision with knowledge, and just as there are many kinds of vision, there are many kinds of knowledge: scientific, moral, ethical, practical, etc. In contrast, the other protagonist of the novel, Werner Pfennig, has perfect vision (if he didn’t have it, he wouldn’t be admitted to the prestigious National Institute), but struggles to see through the propaganda of the Nazi Party. From early on, Doerr encourages us to consider the different symbolic ramifications of sight and seeing, and all the different ways in which a person can be said to “see.” The protagonist, Marie-Laure LeBlanc, is blind, meaning that she’s incapable of literally seeing, and yet her intelligence, strong moral code, and integrity give her a kind of “sight” that allows her to see the German invasion of France for what it really is: a greedy, cruel endeavor that must be opposed at all costs. The most obvious symbol in All the Light We Cannot See (so obvious it shows up in the title) is vision. I had my daughter Dawn go through all of the film and videos and everything that my husband took, because he was never without a camera in his hand. One big thing that separates this from other docs is how much source material the filmmakers had on you, both at work and at home. And he went about searching and looking for someone who might want to do this kind of thing, and the network was right there, and it all kind of fell into place very nicely. He said, “I think that we should do a documentary about your career.” And, by that time, I had been retired for a long time and sort of forgot what I did for a living. Well, my manager, Bruce Allen, had been talking about this for a long time.
